Most local nonprofits never fail dramatically. They fade. The founder burns out, the board becomes a formality, the program narrows to what a single grant can fund, and the organization drifts away from the mission that made neighbors care. This course is written to prevent that slow fade. It is for the Monmouth families, professionals, and civic-minded residents who are serious about creating a new nonprofit — or helping one that already exists become healthier.

What You'll Learn

Six guided modules, moving from the question "Should we start this?" to a dated 90-day action plan.

  1. Should We Start a Nonprofit? — a diagnostic framework: mission clarity, community need, alternative models (fiscal sponsorship, cooperative, foundation), and the honest cost of self-employment as a founder.
  2. The Legal Foundation — New Jersey nonprofit setup, bylaws, board composition, registered agent, and when to involve an attorney (and when a template is enough).
  3. Board Design That Doesn't Collapse — recruitment, onboarding, conflict-of-interest policy, executive session norms, and the difference between a board that rubber-stamps and one that governs.
  4. Program Design With a Theory of Change — moving from "we want to help" to a measurable chain of inputs, outputs, and outcomes; sample logic model for a Monmouth youth or arts program.
  5. First-Year Fundraising Without Selling Your Soul — the realistic first-year budget, local foundation landscape (CFNJ Monmouth County Community Grant, family foundations, corporate microgrants), individual donor cultivation, and the fiscal sponsorship option.
  6. Compliance, Transparency & the 90-Day Plan — NJ annual report, IRS Form 990, conflict-of-interest, bookkeeping, and a dated checklist for the first 90 days after incorporation.

Module 5 in Brief — The Local Funding Landscape

For a new Monmouth nonprofit, the first-year funding stack is usually a mix of family and friends, a small local foundation grant, one corporate or community microgrant, and an individual donor base that is just starting. The Community Foundation of New Jersey runs a Monmouth County Community Grant that supports local initiatives demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; award sizes and deadlines shift, so the course walks you through how to research the current cycle at cfnj.org. Other recurring opportunities include the Giants Foundation youth-development grants, the Tanger community grant, and the many family foundations on the shore that fund youth, arts, and education programs in Rumson, Holmdel, Little Silver, and nearby towns. The course gives you a practical worksheet for mapping these to your mission — not a promise that any of them will fund you.

Who This Is For

Affluent Monmouth families and professionals who have a community idea and want to turn it into a sustainable 501(c)(3) — or board members of an existing local nonprofit who sense the organization is drifting. The course is editorial and educational. It is not legal or tax advice. You will work with your own attorney, CPA, and, if needed, a nonprofit consultant.

How Love of Humanity supports this work

Love of Humanity (LOH) is a peer 501(c)(3) in Monmouth County. We do not provide legal, tax, or grant advice, and we do not hold donor funds on your behalf. We help the broader nonprofit-community reach the families and professionals who are ready to build.
