Where the Shore's STEM Pipeline Runs: How a County Career Academy Became the Nation's Top STEM School

High Technology High School in Lincroft is now the nation's top STEM school. Here's the county pipeline behind it — and how a Monmouth family can get a child in.

When a U.S. News ranking lands, it is easy to scroll past. But this one should stop Monmouth families in their tracks: High Technology High School, a public career academy in Lincroft sitting on the Brookdale Community College campus, was named the number one STEM high school in the country for 2026-27, and the number one high school in New Jersey for the third straight year. The result is not a surprise to anyone who has sat through an MCVSD open house, watched a Marine Academy student defend a lobster-physiology study in front of a room, or seen an HTHS senior handed a six-figure future before graduation. What it is a surprise to most families is that this is a county vocational district, open to any Monmouth County resident, tuition-free, and running fifteen distinct learning environments from Aberdeen to Freehold.

Where the Shore's STEM Pipeline Runs

The Monmouth County Vocational School District (MCVSD) is not a single school; it is a network. Its administrative offices are at 4000 Kozloski Road in Freehold, and its Career Academies and shared-time programs spread across the county, with campuses in Freehold, Lincroft, Freehold Township, Neptune, Tinton Falls, Keyport, Hazlet, Middletown, Aberdeen and Asbury Park.

The Nation's Top STEM School, and the Schools Around It

U.S. News & World Report's 2026-27 ranking put HTHS at number one among STEM schools nationally, number one overall in New Jersey, and number 28 nationally. The ranking is driven by the share of students who took and passed Advanced Placement math and science exams. The district's other academies hold the surrounding ranks:

What a County STEM Pipeline Looks Like From the Shore

For a Rumson or Little Silver family, the practical question is less "is this a good school?" than "what does this open, and how does a child actually get in?" A few concrete facts from the district's own materials:

Why It Matters Locally

The reason this belongs in a Monmouth family's planning file is that a world-class STEM education no longer has to live on the other side of the Turnpike or behind a private-school tuition bill. The district's public, merit-based academies mean that a child who is a genuine mathematician or future physician can build a nationally recognized portfolio while still living within a half hour of home. That matters for two reasons: it keeps a gifted student's formative years close to the family and the community they are part of, and it gives the district a reason to keep investing in the very infrastructure — lab equipment, industry partnerships, faculty like Dr. Dina Ellsworth, named for the 2026 DuPont Excellence in Teaching Award — that makes the pipeline hold. When the county can produce the state's number one high school, the rest of the community's educational decisions get easier, because the baseline has moved.

How Love of Humanity Supports This Work

Love of Humanity is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works alongside the institutions that shape Monmouth's next generation. We do not run schools — we help the families, foundations, and civic leaders around them put resources where they move furthest: scholarship funds, mentorship time, lab and equipment grants, and co-branded family-education programs that connect the shore's established families with its public schools. When a district can field the state's top STEM school, our job is to help the community around it match that standard, so that a student's talent is met by the resources to finish strong.
