What Monmouth families should know

If you have a high-school student (or you’re a college parent), the FAFSA is the single form that unlocks most financial aid — federal grants/loans and New Jersey aid like the Tuition Aid Grant (TAG). The catch is that “FAFSA season” now starts earlier than most families think, and NJ has its own follow-up step that’s easy to miss.

Here’s a practical timeline for Monmouth County families for the 2026–27 school year (college starting or continuing between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027). The goal: get your form in early, avoid the common “oops” moments, and keep NJ state aid from falling through the cracks.

The 3 dates to put in your phone right now

1) October 1, 2025 (the earliest you can file for 2026–27)

The federal FAFSA for 2026–27 can be submitted as early as October 1, 2025 — not before. The official FAFSA form says you can file “as early as possible, but no earlier than October 1, 2025.” (Federal Student Aid (2026–27 FAFSA PDF))

2) April 15, 2026 (NJ deadline for many returning TAG families)

If your student received a Tuition Aid Grant (TAG) in 2025–26 and you’re renewing for 2026–27, New Jersey lists April 15, 2026 as the deadline to submit a completed FAFSA (or NJ Alternative Financial Aid Application). (HESAA state deadlines (2026–27))

3) September 15, 2026 (NJ deadline for many first-time/“new to TAG” families)

If you’re a high school senior, first-time college student, or you didn’t receive TAG in 2025–26, New Jersey lists September 15, 2026 as the deadline to submit a completed FAFSA (or NJ Alternative Financial Aid Application) for fall/spring aid. (HESAA state deadlines (2026–27))

The step most NJ families miss: your NJFAMS “State Record”

In New Jersey, submitting the FAFSA is often only step one. HESAA (the state agency) also requires you to complete your State Record in NJFAMS — basically the NJ “to-do list” where you may need to confirm info, respond to verification, correct something, or add a college.

For 2026–27, New Jersey lists October 1, 2026 as the deadline to complete your State Record in NJFAMS for both returning TAG recipients and first-time students (with the note that it can also be “30 days from initial notification” depending on your situation). (HESAA state deadlines (2026–27))

Mom-to-mom translation: even if you filed the FAFSA months ago, you can still lose NJ aid if you don’t finish the NJFAMS tasks when they pop up.
