Legacy Monmouth
The Legacy Lands Still Working: Longstreet Farm, Walnford, MCHA & the Holmes House
Historic Longstreet Farm, Historic Walnford, the Monmouth County Historical Association, and the Holmes-Hendrickson House — Monmouth's oldest working landscape, still open on a public schedule.
Between the Gilded Age mansions and the farm roads, Monmouth keeps its legacy lands working
Most of the attention in Monmouth's preservation conversation goes to the summer cottages of Elberon, Deal, and Allenhurst — the marble and gingerbread that drew presidents in the 1880s. But the county's oldest working landscape is the farmland and the small civic collection that sits between the shore and the pinelands. This week's four institutions are Historic Longstreet Farm in Holmdel, Historic Walnford in Upper Freehold, the Monmouth County Historical Association in Red Bank, and the Holmes-Hendrickson House in Holmdel. Together they answer a quieter question: how does a county keep its pre-resort history legible for the families who live here today?
Historic Longstreet Farm — a 14-room farmhouse that runs a season
Longstreet Farm in Holmdel is the county's most-visited historic farmstead. The Monmouth County Park System interprets rural Monmouth life in the 1890s across nine acres, and its 2026 season has already run one of its signature events.
- Harvest Home Festival returned on Sunday, September 27, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring wagon rides, 1890s-style base ball, a pie-eating contest, a plowing contest, live entertainment, and craft demonstrations — free admission and parking – patch.com
- The farm's 14-room Federal-style farmhouse and Dutch barn anchor a 9-acre interpretation of 1890s rural Monmouth – monmouthcountyparks.com
- The Park System's 2026 Longstreet Farm calendar includes seasonal demonstrations such as a Victorian laundry demonstration, a 19th-century woodworking demonstration, and a penny-rug demonstration – co.monmouth.nj.us
Historic Walnford — the gristmill is back on weekends
Upper Freehold's Walnford is the county's open-air living history museum. Donated to Monmouth County in 1985, the site includes the pre-Revolutionary Waln House, an 1879 carriage house, and a 19th-century gristmill that has returned to its regular weekend demonstration schedule.
- 19th-century gristmill demonstrations resume on weekends, April through November, with four roughly 15-minute runs each Saturday and Sunday at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 p.m. — free – newjerseystage.com
- The October 3–4, 2026 weekend ran milling demonstrations at the Walnford gristmill, plus "Music on the Porch," a free live acoustic duo performance on the porch of the gristmill site – nj.com
- The site's historical buildings are open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. – newjerseystage.com
Monmouth County Historical Association — "Storm of Revolution" opens
The MCHA in Red Bank is the county's central archival and exhibit home. Its 2026 flagship is "Storm of Revolution," a collection-based exhibition that opens at the end of April.
- "Storm of Revolution" will utilize hundreds of archival documents and objects from the MCHA collection to bring to life the drama, glory, and impact of the American Revolution in Monmouth County, including the divided loyalties that engulfed the county in civil warfare – monmouthcountylib.libcal.com
- Touchstone display pieces include township petitions, relics from the Battle of Monmouth, and one of the nation's earliest flags – monmouthcountylib.libcal.com
- A free online preview, "Historically Speaking: Storm of Revolution," was held on Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. – monmouthcountylib.libcal.com
Holmes-Hendrickson House — one of the county's oldest farmhouses
The Holmes-Hendrickson House in Holmdel, built in 1754, is one of the best-preserved Georgian/Dutch vernacular farmhouses in the county. It is part of the broader Holmes family footprint that shaped early Holmdel.

- The Holmes family is one of the founding families of early Monmouth, and the house is a documented stop on the county's Revolutionary-era heritage tours – revolutionarynj.org
- The property sits within the same Holmdel corridor as Historic Longstreet Farm, making the two sites a natural pairing for a single family-day itinerary – monmouthcountyparks.com
Why it matters locally
These four institutions do not compete with the Gilded Age mansions for attention; they fill the gap the mansions leave. The summer resorts tell the story of who came to Monmouth for six weeks a year. The farmsteads, the gristmill, the county museum, and the 1754 farmhouse tell the story of who lived here the other fifty weeks. For families in Holmdel, Upper Freehold, Red Bank, and the surrounding pinelands towns, the through-line is that the county's oldest working landscape is still operating on a public schedule — free or low-cost, open on weekends, and interpretable for a child who has never seen a gristmill run. That is a kind of civic infrastructure that does not show up in a glossy resort brochure, and it is the part of Monmouth's story that the next generation is most likely to lose if no one keeps the wheels turning.

How Love of Humanity supports this work
Love of Humanity is a Monmouth County 501(c)(3) that works alongside the county's historic sites and the Monmouth County Park System as a peer organization, not a funder. We help families understand the patron and giving landscape before they commit, we connect planned-giving structures with the institutions that will steward them, and we co-develop the family-education content that turns a gristmill demonstration, a farm festival, or a museum visit into a durable understanding of what these places are for. If you sit on a board, direct a foundation, or steward a family office in Monmouth, we build co-branded family education with the institutions you already trust.
