The River Rats: Fifty Years of Families on the Water

For more than seven decades, the Fair Haven River Rats have operated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to making sailing an everyday family experience. The organization is run entirely by volunteers and has welcomed more than 5,000 children into its junior program, where ages 8-16 learn to sail after demonstrating basic swimming ability. Boats are provided at no extra cost, and member families enjoy a 35% discount on program fees.

The River Rats' flagship youth sailing program feeds directly into the Junior Sweepstakes Regatta—the beloved "August Sweeps." Each early August, the River Rats manage race timing, judging, and on-water safety for a four-day event that moves from Shrewsbury Sailing & Yacht Club to the Monmouth Boat Club, drawing more than 50 young sailors from across the county.

Just a short drive inland, the Shrewsbury Sailing & Yacht Club in Oceanport hosts the NJ Melges 15 Fall Regatta and the first half of the August Sweeps, offering a well-maintained launch site and a vibrant social scene for families who gather to watch and compete.

The Sandy Hook Bay Catamaran Club in Atlantic Highlands adds a bay-wide dimension to the ecosystem, organizing regattas such as the Division 11 Points Regatta and the A-Class competition, as well as "Sail the Bay Day," which provides free sailing jaunts with experienced skippers. Its collaboration with the Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club for the Blue Water Regatta underscores the region's commitment to accessible, high-quality sailing experiences.

Along the beachfront, the historic Deal Casino Beach Club (125 Ocean Ave, Deal) reopened its beach on May 22, 2026, offering cabanas, a pool, and a maintained shoreline that has become a gathering place for Monmouth families seeking sun, surf, and shoreline camaraderie.

Sail 4th 250: A Waterfront Moment for a Generation

In July 2026, Sandy Hook Bay hosted the Sail 4th 250—America's 250th-anniversary maritime celebration. From 8 a.m. on July 3 to 8 a.m. on July 4, towering tall ships sailed into the bay, creating a historic tableau that resonated with children and grandparents alike.
